USA Women's Gymnastics Team Falters in Olympic Team Competition
Historic Medal Streak Snapped
The United States women's gymnastics team, one of the most dominant in Olympic history, came up short of earning a third consecutive gold medal in the team competition at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The squad's silver medal marked the first time since 2008 that the Americans had not won the team gold.
The team's performance was marred by uncharacteristic mistakes, including a fall by Simone Biles on the vault and a balance beam error by Sunisa Lee. The Russians, who had won the team gold in 2016, took advantage of the Americans' miscues to secure the top spot on the podium.
