Major Explosion at BASF Chemical Plant Injures Multiple Workers

14 workers sustained minor injuries in the incident, which occurred when an explosion set off a blaze in a southern section of the plant

The Oppau explosion occurred on September 21, 1921, when approximately 4,500 metric tons of a mixture of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate exploded, killing 565 people and injuring over 2,000

BASF SE says that an explosion and fire at its main German factory did not contaminate the area, adding that the 15 employees injured in the blast are expected to make a full recovery.

The explosion and subsequent fire Monday at the main plant of German chemical giant BASF left 18 people slightly injured, including seven who were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but BASF said it believes it was caused by a technical defect in a production facility.

The company said it is working closely with authorities to investigate the incident and prevent similar accidents from happening in the future.
