Shelley Duvall, Star of 'The Shining' and 'Nashville,' Dies at 75
Acclaimed actress known for her quirky screen presence and haunting performances
Shelley Duvall, the big-eyed, waifish performer who won the Cannes actress award for her role in Robert Altman's 1977 film "Three Women," died July 6 at the age of 75.
Duvall, who starred in several of Altman's most acclaimed films, including "MASH" (1970), "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971), and "Nashville" (1975), was best known to a wider audience for her role as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic "The Shining."
Duvall's performance in "The Shining" is one of the most iconic in horror film history. Her portrayal of the terrified and increasingly isolated mother of a young boy who is possessed by a malevolent spirit is both harrowing and heartbreaking.
Duvall's career declined in the years after "The Shining," and she largely disappeared from the public eye in the late 1990s. In recent years, she had been diagnosed with mental illness and had been living in a nursing home in Texas.
Duvall's death is a sad reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of mental health awareness. She was a talented actress who brought joy to millions of people, and she will be missed.
