Upcoming Solar Activity May Cause Geomagnetic Storm Conditions

Updated: May 10, 2024 - 7:27 PM

A powerful explosion on the surface of the sun triggered a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere on Friday, an event that is expected to continue through the weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) anticipates that the sun may reach its maximum activity period, known as solar maximum, between late 2024 and early 2025.

According to the SWPC, the Solar Cycle 25 is projected to culminate between January and October of 2024 with an elevated number of sunspots, which can result in heightened solar activity and geomagnetic storms.

These ongoing geomagnetic storm conditions are a consequence of the sun's heightened activity, and the SWPC predicts their persistence through the weekend.
