The Megalopoli Mine: A Greek Energy Source

A lignite and coal open-pit mine

The Megalopoli Mine is a large lignite and coal open-pit mine located in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is owned and operated by the Public Power Corporation of Greece (PPC). The mine is one of the largest in Greece and is a major source of energy for the country.

Planned closure of lignite plant units

The withdrawal of the remaining two lignite plant units at Megalopoli, units three and four, is planned for 2022 and 2023. This is part of Greece's plan to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2028.

Megalopoli, a city in the Peloponnese

Megalopoli is also the name of a city in the Peloponnese region of Greece. The city is located near the Megalopoli Mine and is home to a number of coal-fired power plants. The city is also a center of lignite mining.

Financial assistance to Greece

In 1962, West Germany provided Greece with export credits in the amount of twenty million marks. This financial assistance was used to support the development of the Megalopoli Mine and the construction of the coal-fired power plants in the area.
