Nuggets Advance to First NBA Finals in Franchise History with Sweep of Lakers

Jokic's Historic Performance Leads Denver to Victory

Posted on May 23, 2023

Powered by Nikola Jokic's record-breaking eighth triple-double of the playoffs and his stellar MVP performance in the Western Finals, the Denver Nuggets have swept the Los Angeles Lakers to advance to their first NBA Finals in franchise history. The Nuggets capped off their dominant performance with a 113-107 victory in Game 4 on Monday night at the Staples Center.

Jokic, who averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in the series, put up another impressive stat line in the closeout game. He finished the night with 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists, leading the Nuggets in all three categories.

The Lakers, who were led by LeBron James' 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists, fought hard to keep pace with the Nuggets, but they were ultimately unable to overcome Denver's size and depth. Anthony Davis, who had been a key contributor for the Lakers throughout the playoffs, was limited to just four points on 2-for-11 shooting due to an ankle injury.

With the victory, the Nuggets will now face the Eastern Conference champion Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals, which begin on Thursday, June 1. The Nuggets will be looking to upset the Bucks, who are the defending champions and have the league's Most Valuable Player, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
